Staying in your comfort zone can be one of the most self-damaging things you can do in todays fast moving world, yet so many of us do it. The question is, why do we do it?

One of the many reasons why find it so hard to leave our comfort zones is the fear of the unknown. It is similar to the fear of the dark, people aren’t scared by the actual darkness but by the fear of not knowing what is in the darkness. We humans often find comfort in familiarity, and naturally it is very easy for us to stay surrounded by what we know. Change can sometimes be difficult and challenging, which is another reason as to why we avoid it. Actor, Benedict Cumberbatch quoted “The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun.”

Change can open new doors and provide you with new opportunities and it is so important for us as people and individuals to be open to these new opportunities and to break cycles that we get stuck in. Everyone has the ability to break out of our comfort zones, we all have different thresholds, but it is achievable. It is also important to keep in mind that the longer you spend in your comfort zone, the harder and harder it becomes to break out, but once you make the initial step, the next ones will be much easier.

We touch on this in much more detail and cover some other topics surrounding comfort zones in our most recent podcast, so join us as we further explore how to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
